Jazz trios embody the essence of small-group interplay, where creativity and communication thrive. This four-week course takes a deep dive into the many forms of jazz trios, highlighting their unique characteristics and key innovators. Members will explore the elegance of drummerless piano trios such as Nat King Cole and Oscar Peterson as well as examining piano trios with drummers, including the introspective beauty of Bill Evans’ ensembles and the driving swing of artists such as Wynton Kelly and Red Garland.  Guitar trios, led by artists like Jim Hall, Grant Green, and Johnny Smith, bring a different texture and melodic sensibility to the trio format, while organ trios, such as those led by Jimmy Smith, groove with soul and blues-infused energy. Finally, the class will look at chord-less trios like Sonny Rollins’ groundbreaking Live at the Village Vanguard, where melodic and rhythmic interplay take center stage. Through guided listening, historical context, and engaging discussion, discover how these iconic configurations shaped jazz history and inspired generations of musicians. Whether you’re a lifelong jazz fan or new to the music, this course will provide fresh insights into the art and evolution of jazz trios.
