Looking to learn how to utilize Microsoft Excel to organize and analyze program data? This workshop is ideal for beginners looking to build a solid foundation in Microsoft Excel and is suitable for individuals involved in entry-level data analysis and data management in their daily work, or those looking to gain experience in these areas. We will discuss when Excel is appropriate as a data management tool, best practices for use, and how to take full advantage of features such as conditional formatting, functions, and PivotTables. Additionally, we will provide resources for further learning. No prior experience with Microsoft Excel is required for this course. However, participants should have a basic familiarity with using a computer and Microsoft products (such as Word and PowerPoint) and an understanding of fundamental computer concepts.    

This is an in-person workshop that will be held on Washington University’s Danforth Campus. The exact location and direction will be emailed to registered participants before the course date. A computer or laptop equipped with Excel 2016 or later is required.

Target AudiencesThis workshop is ideal for beginners looking to build a solid foundation in Microsoft Excel. However, participants should have a basic familiarity with using a computer and Microsoft Products (Word, PowerPoint) and understand fundamental computer concepts.

  • Section 2:  Analysis and Advanced Techniques - 70 minutes
    • Data Analysis Using Excel Functions
    • PivotTables
    • Advanced functions
    • Ensuring Data Integrity
  • Section 3: Data Exploration and Cleaning - 55 minutes
    • Data Cleaning Tools
    • Exploring Data with Formatting
    • Creating and Utilizing Tables

*Two 5-minute break will occur during the workshop.  

Learner Outcomes

  • Apply basic principles and best practices of data management and data entry
  • Apply tools to explore and prepare data for analysis
  • Summarize and analyze data using PivotTables and basic functions

Course Completion Requirements:

The Brown School is an approved provider of Social Work CEs in Missouri and Illinois. To earn credit, attendees must arrive at the scheduled time, attend the entire course, and complete an online course evaluation. You may still qualify for partial Social Work Missouri and Illinois CEs if you miss part of the training. Prerequisites

Basic experience with Microsoft Excel functionality and general computer use is recommended. Mac users are welcome but note that the Excel interface varies across platforms.
