By 2034, there will be more adults 65 and older than children under the age of 18. As a result of the population growing older, therapists will be seeing more aging adults in their therapy practice than ever before. With the most common mental health conditions (depression, anxiety, substance use disorders, insomnia, PTSD, and severe mental illness) increasing the risk for dementia disorders, therapists will be navigating early signs of memory loss in their practice. Every mental health provider must have a basic understanding of dementia disorders, understand the connection between mental health conditions and dementia disorders, and have tools to provide support to older adults presenting to therapy with memory loss.

In this workshop, participants will learn the difference between mild cognitive impairment, dementia, and Alzheimer’s Disease as well as unique considerations for BIPOC and LGTBQ+ older adults. The link between common mental health conditions and dementia disorders, the pros and cons of dementia evaluation, and the benefits of early diagnosis of dementia will be explored. Participants will also learn 5 steps they can take to help older adults with memory loss and receive a roadmap for referrals for dementia evaluation.

This is an interactive synchronous distance learning course via Zoom.

This workshop meets the Illinois social work licensure requirement for Alzheimer's Disease and other Dementiae.
