This training focuses on utilizing Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) skills for effective suicide risk assessment and safety planning. Participants will gain practical knowledge on assessing suicide risk, identifying critical warning signs, and applying DBT strategies to help individuals at risk. The session will cover how to create a comprehensive safety plan that integrates DBT skills, equipping participants with the tools to support individuals in crisis while fostering their emotional regulation and coping abilities.
This is an interactive synchronous distance learning course via Zoom. This class meets the licensure requirement for 3 hours of continuing education in suicide prevention.

- 2:15-3:00pm - Behavior Chain Analysis to assess current suicidal thinking and behavior
- 3:00-3:45pm - Tailoring Distress Tolerance, Emotion Regulation, and Interpersonal Effectiveness Skills to Enhance Coping

Learner Outcomes
- Demonstrate effective suicide assessment techniques and risk management strategies
- Organize safety planning for suicide risk, including the ability to create effective coping skill strategies for clients utilizing DBT skills techniques
- Determine best coping skill options to apply to their client’s safety planning processes
- Diagram variables leading to suicidal behaviors using Behavior Chain Analysis to effectively inform coping skills and safety plan.
Course Completion Requirements:
- The Brown School, Washington University in St. Louis, Professional Development, provider #2130, is approved as an ACE provider to offer social work continuing education by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) Approved Continuing Education (ACE) program. Regulatory boards are the final authority on courses accepted for continuing education credit. ACE provider approval period: 9/24/2024 – 9/24/2025. Social workers completing this course receive 3 general continuing education credits.
