From its beginnings as a French colony of 1,000, St. Louis grew into the nation’s fourth-largest city by the end of the 19th century. This course explores the factors behind this transformation, including location, the French melting pot, and immigrant industrialization. Participants will also examine the contributions of women, both black and white, as trailblazers and discuss whether St. Louis is more of a Southern or Western city. The course includes two field trips.
