3 CEs

Research indicates that approximately 17 US veterans commit suicide each day and 70% of these deaths are firearm-related. For clinicians seeking to provide quality mental health care to veterans, it is essential to have a basic understanding of suicide risk and management for this population. Lethal means safety, which is an evidence-based facet of suicide prevention care that embodies strategies to reduce access to methods commonly used in suicide attempts. By reducing the immediate availability of lethal means, the chances of survival and opportunity for intervention significantly increase for our veterans.

This workshop will highlight key risk factors for veteran suicide including access to lethal means, mental health conditions, physical conditions, and social isolation. Dr. Keyes will provide an overview of lethal means safety interventions and strategies. Key practices discussed will include safely storing firearms, securing medications, and limiting access to other potential methods of fatal self-harm. Suicide prevention resources for veterans, their families, and clinicians will be reviewed.

This is an in-person workshop that will be held on Washington University’s Danforth Campus. The exact location and direction will be emailed to registered participants before the course date.

This class meets the requirement for at least 2 CEs in suicide continuing education each licensure period.
