To effectively address HIV/STI prevention in social work practice, it is essential to ensure a strong foundational knowledge regarding the impact of HIV/STI diagnoses on various populations. Understanding the unique challenges faced by different groups, including marginalized communities, is critical for tailoring prevention efforts that are culturally competent and effective.

Social workers must be well-versed in the psychological, social, and economic consequences of HIV/STI diagnoses to provide holistic support. Access to prevention tools, such as Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) and regular testing, is a crucial component of prevention strategies. Social workers should actively work to eliminate barriers to these resources, ensuring that all individuals, especially those in underserved populations, have the information and tools they need. Integrating trauma-informed care practices is also essential, as many individuals susceptible to HIV/STIs may have experienced trauma that impacts their health.  Lastly, advocating for policies and systemic changes that support comprehensive HIV/STI prevention is a vital role for social workers. This includes pushing for increased funding for prevention programs, reducing stigma, and ensuring equitable access to healthcare services, which are all necessary for the long-term reduction of HIV/STI rates.
