This on-demand lecture will provide a synopsis of the psychotherapy recommendations in the recent Veteran Affairs and Department of Defenses Clinical Practice Guidelines for treating post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in adults. Dr. Keyes offers an introduction to the leading psychotherapies strongly recommended over pharmacological interventions, including Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), and Prolonged Exposure (PE). This lecture also includes a summary of second-line psychotherapies and highlights a range of clinical resources.

  • Participants will be able to summarize the underlying theory and primary treatment components of the three leading psychotherapies recommended for treating adults with PTSD: PE, CPT, and EMDR.
  • Participants will be able to identify various strategies for navigating common challenges when implementing trauma-focused therapies.
  • Participants will be able to identify multiple clinical resources for providers as well as educational resources for the public to enhance knowledge of PTSD and support implementing these recommended psychotherapies.
