Loss is a universal experience and grief is the natural reaction to loss. Research indicates 10-15% of the general population experience significant difficulty adapting to the loss of a loved one and become “stuck” in the grief process. This disruption is referred to as Prolonged Grief Disorder (PGD), a mental health diagnosis added to the DSM-5-TR in March 2022. The COVID-19 pandemic introduced many uncontrollable circumstances that may contribute to PGD and emerging research indicates its increasing prevalence in the past few years. Prolonged Grief Disorder Therapy (PGDT) is a time-limited treatment protocol explicitly developed to help people progress through the grief process and move forward following their loss.

This workshop will provide a summary of the theoretical underpinnings and body of research supporting PGDT. An overview of the clinical assessment of PGD as well as PGDT protocol will be provided. Resources will be highlighted including formal training opportunities for PGDT. This seminar will use a combination of lectures, clinical examples, class/small group discussions, and individual reflection activities to reinforce learning.
