This workshop will be held in person at the Brown School.

Research shows that a large percentage of the population is impacted by trauma, and the effects of those traumas can go unnoticed by social workers who have not received specialized training in trauma-focused assessments. If the effects of trauma go unnoticed and if clients are dysregulated due to a social worker’s actions, treatment may not be as effective. What’s more, the core values of social work include service, social justice, and competence – all of which are tenets of trauma-informed practice but are often not presented as such. Therefore, trauma-informed care is not only a best practice but also an ethical responsibility.

This workshop will explore trauma-informed care as an ethical responsibility for all social workers. We will offer an in-depth review of the NASW Code of Ethics, highlighting all six ethical principles and six ethical standards, discuss the core tenets of trauma-informed practice in-depth, and connect them to the NASW Code of Ethics, focusing on the key components between them. Lastly, we will offer participants the opportunity to practice trauma-informed care during various hypothetical skill rehearsals, increasing their comfort level in working with an emotionally activating topic.

This class meets the licensure requirement for 3 hours of continuing education in ethics.

General Admission: $60**

Class size is limited to 45.
