BRWN-100005 - White Supremacy in Social Services: Strategies for a More Equitable Practice

Preferred registration deadline: March 1st This workshop will be held in person at the Brown School. 12 CEUs All social service professionals have a responsibility to confront their own biases, whether conscious or unconscious. In this Intensive Training workshop, we will explore contemporary scholarly thought regarding the presence and impact of racism and white supremacy within U.S. culture, and how it impacts the personal and professional work of social service practitioners. We will learn skills and strategies for confronting and minimizing the impact of white supremacy from the perspective of a practitioner of color and a white practitioner.  We will learn definitions critical to understanding including race, racism, oppression, white privilege, white body supremacy, internalized superiority, internalized oppression, racial awareness and racial sensitivity, allyship, and cultural humility; and how it's expressed in exchanges, policies, and practices. We will also create plans of action to advance anti-oppressive systems and advance social change in our lives and our practices using small group work, experiential exercise, large group discussion, and didactic presentation. Focus will be on external and internal manifestations of privilege and supremacy and how each contributes to the resistance to authentic action. Together, we will challenge ourselves to foster racial equity through meaningful social change.  This workshop meets the Missouri & Illinois social work licensure requirement for 3 hours of continuing education in diversity/cultural competency/humility.
