BRWN-010271 - Mental Health & People with Intellectual Disabilities: Assessment and Treatment Considerations

Preferred registration deadline: March 20th 6 CEUs When people with intellectual disabilities also have a mental illness, social service providers may find it particularly challenging to meet their complex needs. This class will provide context and practical suggestions. We will discuss which intellectual disabilities put people at greatest risk for psychiatric illness and which diagnoses are most common. The class will consider how symptoms may present in people with intellectual disabilities and the resources available for assessment and monitoring progress. Data will be shared regarding the effectiveness of medication and non-pharmacological treatments. Recommendations will be shared to help clients and their families make the most out of appointments with a psychiatrist and establish a strong team in support of the client.
