BRWN-010347 - When Worlds Collide: Ethically Navigating Boundaries Within the Practice of Social Work

Preferred registration deadline: December 1st This workshop will be held in person at the Brown School 3 CEUs Like all people, social workers are members of their community. Simultaneously, social workers have an ethical responsibility to always maintain professional boundaries with their clients. So what should happen when social workers find themselves unexpectedly crossing paths with their clients outside of their professional role? How should you respond when these situations are unavoidable? This workshop is designed to help social workers feel prepared to ethically respond when their life journeys collide with the people they serve. Using the NASW Code of Ethics, we will review sections that emphasize how to approach dual relationships and apply ethical decision-making strategies to common encounters. We will discuss how to remain HIPAA compliant by utilizing tools to set appropriate boundaries with clients, navigating dual relationships and other conflicts of interest, and how to respond to client transference as it emerges. We will also have an opportunity to reflect on personal emotional reactions and learn tools to respond when countertransference surfaces. This class meets the licensure requirement for 3 hours of continuing education in ethics.
