Social workers, like all people, are members of their community. They attend places of worship, participate in local committees, and visit the local stores. Simultaneously, social workers have an ethical responsibility to always maintain professional boundaries with their clients. So, what should happen when social workers find themselves unexpectedly crossing paths with their clients outside of their professional role? How should a social worker respond when these situations are unavoidable?

This training is designed to help social workers feel prepared to ethically respond to when our life journeys collide with the life journeys of the people we serve. Specifically, this training with review the sections of the NASW Code of Ethics that emphasize how to approach dual relationships and apply ethical decision-making strategies to common dual relationships social workers may encounter. This training will not only discuss how to remain HIPAA compliant, but also equip social workers with the tools needed to set appropriate boundaries with clients, navigate dual relationships and other conflicts of interest, and respond to client transference as it emerges. Social workers will also have an opportunity to reflect on their own emotional reactions and gain tools for how to respond when countertransference emerges in these situations.

This is an interactive synchronous distance learning course via Zoom.

This class meets the licensure requirement for 3 hours of continuing education in ethics.
