Human sexuality is a universal experience, yet many helping professionals feel unprepared to talk about it-whether addressing sexual pleasure, trauma, or identity. This discomfort often stems from a lack of training in how to navigate these conversations in an ethical and effective manner.  To support clients in becoming safer, more informed, and empowered around sexuality, practitioners must build skills for engaging in open, respectful dialogue.

This workshop will equip you with trauma-informed strategies for addressing sexuality-related topics in clinical practice. Key areas include current terminology, best practices for responding to sexual disclosures, maintaining confidential case files that include sexual information, and managing secondary traumatic stress. We will explore a broad spectrum of human sexual experiences, including gender-expansive identities, queer relationships, kinks/fetishes, and sex work. Through discussion, ethical case scenarios, and skill-based rehearsals, participants will develop confidence in navigating complex, sensitive conversations. Special attention will be given to gender-diverse identities, LGBTQ+ relationships, kink, and sex work. Participants will be invited to reflect on how their personal values and biases influence their work with clients across the spectrum of human sexual identity and behavior and to adopt culturally responsive, affirming practices.

This is an in-person workshop that will be held on Washington University’s Danforth Campus. The exact location and directions will be emailed to registered participants before the course date.

This workshop meets the social work licensure requirement for 3 hours of continuing education in cultural competency/humility.
