BRWN-010307 - Play Therapy Techniques to Address Suicide Risk in Black Youth

Preferred registration deadline: December 3rd This workshop will be conducted in a virtual Zoom meeting format. 3 CEUs Rates of suicide in Black youth have been rising over the past few years, but little attention has been made to these children suffering in silence. Black youth experience unique stressors that aid in the thoughts and actions of suicidal behavior. Research has shown that psychological distress is linked to high rates of discrimination and microaggressions, which contributes to thoughts and acts of suicide for Black children. Mental health professionals must be skilled in identifying the key signs of suicide risk that Black youth may exhibit in their play. Time will be spent exploring play themes that may reflect signs of trauma, grief, or suicide risk and play techniques to help adequately support Black youth through suicidal ideation and behavior.
