BRWN-010301 - Ethical Social Work with Clients who have Cognitive Challenges

Preferred registration deadline: August 6th This workshop will be conducted in a virtual Zoom meeting online format. 3 CEUs Thorny decisions and ethical issues frequently arise for social workers involved in the care of someone with dementia, traumatic brain injury, or other cognitive impairment. The responsibility to respect a client’s right of self-determination can be in tension with helping someone remain safe and avoid exploitation. This is made even more challenging when a client is exhibiting executive dysfunction without realizing they are impaired. As social service professionals, we are often involved in assisting clients, families, or interdisciplinary care teams with implementing legal tools, executing strategies and making decisions to maximize health, safety, and quality of life. We must exercise high ethical standards in guiding these interactions, especially when clients have lost the ability to anticipate the results of their actions and decisions. This workshop will help you identify parameters to frame decision-making issues and improve your ability to aid clients and their families towards better outcomes. This class meets the licensure requirement for 3 hours of continuing education in ethics.
