BRWN-010298 - Social Isolation and Medically Vulnerable Clients: Practical Interventions Re-Engagement Post-COVID

Preferred registration deadline: July 2nd This workshop will be conducted in a virtual Zoom meeting online format. 3 CEUs Social isolation is not a new phenomenon; after all, “Eradicate Social Isolation” was included as a Grand Challenges for Social Work years prior to the pandemic. However, new weight has been placed on the problem of isolation due to the past year of social distancing, quarantines, and losses. Older adults and individuals with chronic health issues have been notably isolated throughout the pandemic due to the emphasis placed on their vulnerabilities and their need for protection from COVID. While many people look forward to re-engaging in their communities, others feel overwhelmed at the thought of being fully present in the public again. Unfortunately, the impact of social isolation on the brain does not disappear once public spaces reopen. Social workers are essential to providing assessment, support, education, and guidance to clients who are struggling to re-engage in their communities. This workshop presents current research on the biopsychosocial impact of isolation in adults. We will identify continued risk factors for isolation, discuss therapeutic modalities best suited for at-risk clients, and offer practical intervention models to participants. This workshop will use a combination of lecture and case studies/clinical examples for social workers to apply these strategies to real-life situations.
