3 CEs

Most individuals with a substance use disorder also experience other co-occurring mental health disorders, many of which can be linked to suicidal behaviors. It is often unclear which disorder manifested first. Still, the co-morbidities can complicate each other, leaving the person caught in a tangled cycle of self-injurious behaviors and substance use. The stigma associated with substance use disorder often further isolates impacted people and exacerbates their struggle.

This workshop will explore the prevalence and data related to substance use and suicide to examine their connection. Theories for each will be examined to determine common risk and protective factors to help better understand the conditions of substance use and suicide. Participants will also review potential screening tools and their importance when interacting with individuals.

This is an interactive synchronous distance learning course via Zoom. This class meets the requirement for at least 2 CEs in suicide continuing education each licensure period.
