BRWN-010086 - Supporting Post-Deployment Reintegration: Enhancing Clinicians’ Cultural Competency with Veterans

Preferred registration deadline: November 12th This workshop will be conducted in a virtual Zoom meeting format. 3 CEUs Approximately 2.7 million Americans have served in Iraq and Afghanistan since 2001. Many returning service members experience adjustment difficulties as well as mental health problems that may also impact their families. For clinicians working with this new generation of veterans, it is imperative to have a basic understanding of military culture in order to provide quality mental health care. This workshop will focus on enhancing clinicians’ knowledge of the military culture including core values and beliefs as well as key issues related to active and reserve service members. The deployment cycle and impact of associated stressors on service members as well as family will be reviewed. A general synopsis of common mental health issues, namely post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), substance abuse and suicide as well as traumatic brain injury (TBI), will be provided. Key resources for clinicians, veterans, and family members will be highlighted. This class meets the Illinois licensure requirement for 3 hours of continuing education in cultural competence.
