BRWN-010011 - Guardianship & Powers of Attorney: Ethical Tensions Between Protecting Clients & Self-Determination

Preferred registration deadline: August 9th 3 CEUs Social service professionals see clients with varying degrees of mental capacity. Some may already have had someone appointed by the court to make decisions on their behalf; others may have designated someone to assist with decisions should they become unable to do so independently. Finally, while managing a client’s care, you may come to believe that, in the absence of someone to make crucial medical decisions of behalf of the client, they will become a danger to self or others. This workshop will explore the available legal options of Guardianship and Power of Attorney. We will explore the ethical tension inherent when a client can no longer make their own decisions. Other ethical issues that may arise in treating a client who is no longer competent or may be a danger to himself or others will also be discussed. General Admission: $60** Class size is limited to 45. This class meets the licensure requirement for 3 hours of continuing education in ethics. **Discounts on admission are offered to the Brown School’s students, recent alumni (for 2 years after graduation), other alumni (more than 2 years after graduation), field instructors, faculty, and staff.
