BRWN-010006 - Transitioning from Clinician to Supervisor: Building a New Toolbox
Preferred registration deadline: April 18th
3 CEs
Many social workers and therapists are promoted into supervisory positions because they consistently perform at an excellent level within their current roles. However, if they have not been trained to manage others, they may find this opportunity takes them outside of their strengths. In this workshop, new and aspiring supervisors will be encouraged to make connections between strong clinical skills – such as empathy, clear communication, problem-solving, and being an accountability partner - and the characteristics of a high-quality supervisor. Several scenarios will be presented suggesting options for how effective supervision can be conducted. Group discussion will consider what you can take with you from your clinical to your supervisory toolbox. The importance of a strong management foundation will be emphasized, incorporating best practice information from business and social work. We will discuss the importance of taking care of yourself -navigating vulnerability in the transition from doing work that one is experienced into taking on a new challenge. Finally, the workshop will suggest opportunities for seeking ongoing learning and mentorship as you deepen your skill set.
This is an in-person workshop that will be held on Washington University’s Danforth Campus. The exact location and directions will be emailed to registered participants before the course date.
This workshop meets the Missouri requirement that LCSW supervisors receive 3 hours of continuing education in supervision per licensure period.
