This course will be held in person at the Brown School with asynchronous work in Canvas/WUEx. Access to a computer/laptop with internet access is required.

Motivational Interviewing (MI) is an evidence-based, collaborative communication approach that strengthens intrinsic motivation and supports meaningful behavior change. This skills-focused course equips participants with practical tools to enhance client engagement, explore ambivalence, evoke change talk, and respond effectively to sustain talk across emotional, behavioral, and health-related domains. Learners will gain hands-on experience with core MI strategies through guided practice, role-plays, and feedback, while also exploring how to adapt MI across diverse populations and practice settings using a principle-driven, culturally responsive approach.

Class size is limited to 25.

This class will include both degree-seeking graduate students and practicing professionals. Individuals registering through Professional Development will receive continuing education units - but not academic credit - for the class.

Learner Outcomes

  • Describe the core principles and spirit of Motivational Interviewing and explain how they support client engagement and behavior change
  • Demonstrate foundational MI communication skills, including open-ended questions, affirmations, reflective listening, and summaries (OARS)
  • Apply MI strategies to support clients in making emotional, behavioral, and health-related changes.
 Course Completion Requirements:

The Brown School is an approved provider of Social Work CEs in Missouri and Illinois. To earn credit, attendees must arrive at the scheduled time, attend the entire course, and complete an online course evaluation. You may still qualify for partial Social Work Missouri and Illinois CEs if you miss part of the training. CE Certificates will be available online within 10 business days of course completion by visiting your learner profile at https://ce.wustl.edu/portal/logon.do?method=load&parentSite=brown.  You will receive an email notification with specific instructions for accessing the online certificate when it is available.
