In 1952, François Mauriac won the Nobel Prize in Literature "for the deep spiritual insight and the artistic intensity with which he has in his novels penetrated the drama of human life.” We will read and discuss his best novel, a slim 100-page literary masterpiece often compared to Madame Bovary, portraying a provincial bourgeois woman, Thérèse, caught between modernity and tradition, rebellion and resignation. We will also watch scenes from a 2012 film and compare them to the original text.
