3 CEs

This workshop provides mental health and youth-serving professionals with evidence-based knowledge and applied skills in suicide risk screening and assessment across settings, including schools, outpatient care, and community-based environments. Participants will examine current research on youth suicide, including prevalence, risk and protective factors, and the importance of multiple access points for early identification and intervention. The workshop emphasizes competency in structured suicide risk screening and assessment, including how to directly inquire about suicidal ideation, interpret responses, and evaluate the level of risk based on clinical indicators such as intent, plan, means, and protective factors.

Grounded in research demonstrating that direct screening increases detection of otherwise unrecognized suicidal ideation without increasing risk, evidence-based frameworks and tools will be introduced to support consistent and accurate risk identification. Participants will apply learned concepts through case-based scenarios representing diverse settings (e.g., schools, outpatient therapy, crisis response), supporting clinical decision-making, documentation, and determination of appropriate next steps. This workshop aligns with best-practice guidelines for suicide prevention and response across systems of care.

This workshop meets the requirement for at least 2 CEs in suicide continuing education each licensure period.

This is an in-person workshop that will be held on Washington University’s Danforth Campus. The exact location and directions will be emailed to registered participants before the course date.
