The standard model for suicide prevention in clinical settings involves several steps including screening for suicide using an evidence-based suicide screening tool, If the screen is positive, a comprehensive suicide assessment using a standardized tool should be completed. The next steps normally include determining the suicide risk level and developing a collaborative intervention to meet the identified risk, including safety planning and evidence-based intervention to reduce risk. But what if this is all wrong? What evidence do we have that this is the best approach to suicide prevention? Are our risk-level assignments valid and/or useful? What are we missing? This workshop will explore standard practice, and how it works (and doesn’t) and introduce additional perspectives to broaden the lens to help us see things we have been missing. While we don’t need to abandon the “standard model,” it is increasingly clear this model, by itself, is insufficient for many, if not most, suicide experiences.

This is an in-person workshop that will be held on Washington University’s Danforth Campus. The exact location and directions will be emailed to registered participants before the course date.

This class meets the licensure requirement for 3 hours of continuing education in suicide prevention.
