3 CEs

Engaging in PTSD treatment through shared decision-making (SDM) is a collaborative process that enhances the effectiveness and satisfaction of care. Shared decision-making involves mental health care providers and patients working together to make informed choices about treatment options that align with the patient's values, preferences, and lifestyle. This approach respects the autonomy of individuals with PTSD, providing them with comprehensive information about the benefits and risks of various treatments including the first-line psychotherapies for PTSD: Prolonged Exposure (PE) Therapy, Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR). By fostering open communication and mutual respect, shared decision-making empowers patients to take an active role in their recovery, enhancing their commitment to the treatment plan.

This workshop will provide an overview of PTSD symptoms and their impact on the individual. Common barriers to engagement in PTSD treatment will be reviewed. Dr. Keyes will provide an overview of SDM and its importance in the context of PTSD treatment. Various tools and techniques that can be utilized to facilitate this collaborative decision-making process will be highlighted. SDM resources for clinicians and PTSD resources for veterans, their families, and clinicians will be reviewed.

This is an in-person workshop that will be held on Washington University’s Danforth Campus. The exact location and directions will be emailed to registered participants before the course date.
