In this course, members will explore the global influence of socialist realism, a style commonly associated with the Soviet Union but adopted and adapted by several other countries. Through a four-part series, members will examine how the art worlds of China, North Korea and Cuba integrated socialist realism into their unique cultural contexts, revealing both similarities to the Soviet model and the distinct ways these nations' artists responded to the movement. Members will learn about the origins of socialist realism, how it developed in the Soviet Union, and how it was introduced to China, where traditional Chinese art met Western influences to create a new artistic voice. Members will also delve into the artistic evolution of North Korea, where socialist realism was infused with the country’s own rich cultural traditions.
