In this course, members will build on what they learned during the Fall term with a focus on the French Résistance during World War II and its various forms, including the significant contributions of women like Lucie Aubrac. The course will include a discussion of Joseph Kessel's 1943 novel Army of Shadows and examine the Jewish experience in France, the role of American and French films in inspiring resistance, and the infamous trial of Klaus Barbie, the "Butcher of Lyon." Members will also learn how the Louvre was saved from looting, how artists contributed to France's liberation through art, songs and music, and the pivotal role General de Gaulle played in the liberation.
