In this course, members will examine key events surrounding Confederate secession and the Emancipation Proclamation, including Abraham Lincoln’s evolving thoughts on these critical issues. Readings will include Demon of Unrest by Erik Larson, The Red Badge of Courage by Stephen Crane and Frederick Douglass’s July 4, 1862, speech. Through these works, members will gain deeper insight into the political and social upheavals of the time and explore the complexities of the Civil War era.
