Balancing high-level vision with daily execution, middle managers navigate complex, multi-directional accountabilities while managing critical programmatic and administrative priorities.
Whether experienced or brand new, In the Middle will help you better understand yourself as a leader of people, sharpen your supervision skills, and strengthen your understanding of human service management.
In the Middle is a program of the Brown School’s Center for Human Service Leadership, offered at Delmar DivINe. Through a partnership with the Brown School’s Professional Development program, it is also open to new or aspiring human service middle managers and leaders outside of Delmar DivINe.
IN PERSON PROGRAM: This 7-session program includes in-person class meetings on:
- Jan 28, March 4, and April 8 from 9:00 am - 5:00 pm
- Feb 11, March 25, and April 22 from 9:00 am - 12:00 Noon**
- May 6 from 9:00 am - 1:00 pm.

Learner Outcomes
- Gain expanded knowledge and understanding of the middle manager role.
- Create a greater understanding of employee needs, motivations, expectations and experience; and the impact of organizational structure, culture and leadership style on climate, morale, satisfaction, engagement and organizational identification.
- Expand knowledge of evidence-based practices in job design, hiring, on-boarding, team leadership, coaching and performance management.
- Enhanced commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion and greater understanding of the needs of traditionally marginalized employees. Understanding how organizational policy, structure, culture and operational processes have sustained inequity, limited diversity and created barriers to performance and career success.
- Gain enhanced understanding of oneself and greater ability to manage inter-personal relations and personal stress.
- Gain enhanced self-identification as a leader and the middle managers role beyond their own functional area (e.g. impact on strategy, program, finance, development etc.).
- Improved performance on several individually-identified dimensions.
Course Completion Requirements:
The Brown School is an approved provider of Social Work CEs in Missouri and Illinois. To earn credit, attendees must arrive at the scheduled time, attend the entire course, and complete an online course evaluation. You may still qualify for partial Social Work Missouri and Illinois CEs if you miss part of the training. CE Certificates will be available online within 10 business days of course completion by visiting your learner profile at https://ce.wustl.edu/portal/logon.do?method=load&parentSite=brown. You will receive an email notification with specific instructions for accessing the online certificate when it is available.

Prerequisites
- An approved nomination is required for all applicants. Submitting supervisor must be willing to attend the April 22nd session.
- All applicants must be willing to complete required pre-work due before the first and all subsequent sessions.
