This course will offer a panorama of the life and works of Gustave Courbet (1819 – 1877), a French painter who led the Realism movement and who strongly influenced future artistic trends such as Impressionism, Cubism, and Expressionism.  Considered the “bad boy” of French art, Courbet openly challenged academic expectations by creating shocking and controversial artistic works more in tune with the social, political, and esthetic aspects of modernity.
