One of ancient India’s two works of epic literature, the Mahabharata was originally composed in Sanskrit. As entertaining literature and as the repository of an entire civilization, the Mahabharata possesses enduring value. Our class will touch on the Mahabharata’s historical context, philosophical concerns, and socio-political problems. The goal of our discussions will be to get a picture of the epic’s main characters and the chief conflicts driving the action. Ideally, we will enjoy the rich narratives we find.
