There are four protagonists in this class:  Abraham Lincoln, Stephen A. Douglas, Frederick Douglass and Huckleberry Finn.  We will explore and compare the political careers of Lincoln and Douglas, including their 1858 debates.  We will see how Lincoln's views on slavery were challenged by Douglas on the right and by Douglass on the left.  The class will read some of Frederick Douglass's most memorable writings.  Huck Finn will show us the moral confusion of the time on issues of race and slavery.
