Compiled in the 8th century from older materials, Táin Bó Cúailnge (The Cattle Raid of Cooley) is the oldest Irish epic, a heroic tale on par with Beowulf and The Aeneid.  In it, Ulster's hero Cú Chulainn battles the armies of Connacht for dominance of Ireland, represented by the famous brown bull of Cooley.  Themes include the conflicted morality of heroism, bloodshed and betrayal, the power of place, and bawdy marital farce.
