OLLI-00074 - A History of Language (mostly the English one)

Have you wondered how people came to talk and write?  How did we get from the language of Beowulf to modern American slang?  Beginning with theories of the development of language in humans and the developmental acquisition of language by children, touching on the origins and development of writing, we will explore the history of language --mostly the English one.  Class will be conducted through lecture and student input, with a daily beginning assessment of what people already know about the topic of the day.  Though primarily a lecture class, discussion and question-and-answer will also play a part in the course sessions.  Note:  No class 1/15.
